A special initiative aimed at supporting children displaced by the Los Angeles wildfires took place on Friday in Santa Barbara. Nearly three dozen young evacuees participated in a day camp organized at Cold Springs Elementary School, where they engaged in various enjoyable activities such as music, sports, drama, and arts and crafts. The event was designed to provide a nurturing environment for these children, many of whom have been affected by the recent fires. Mental health professionals were present throughout the day to offer emotional support and counseling services. This collaborative effort brought together multiple organizations with the shared goal of fostering a sense of normalcy and providing therapeutic experiences for the impacted families.
The organizers behind this heartwarming initiative included Project Camp, the Santa Barbara County Department of Behavioral Wellness, and the Small School Districts Association. Together, they created an engaging program that not only entertained but also addressed the psychological needs of the children. Amy Alzina, Superintendent of the Cold Springs School District, emphasized the importance of creating a stable and familiar atmosphere for the kids. "Our experience has shown us how crucial it is to establish a routine and a feeling of stability," she remarked. "The resilience of these children is remarkable; they are eager to engage in activities and enjoy themselves."
The event highlighted the community's response to the challenges faced by those affected by natural disasters. By offering structured and supportive activities, the organizers hoped to help the children process their experiences while providing them with moments of joy and distraction. The presence of trauma counselors ensured that any emotional concerns could be addressed promptly, allowing the children to feel safe and supported during their time away from home.
To further assist the affected families, the day camp will continue on Monday, January 13th, and Tuesday, January 14th, welcoming children aged 6 to 16 from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Located at 2243 Sycamore Canyon Road in Santa Barbara, Cold Springs Elementary School will once again open its doors to provide a comforting space for these young evacuees. Through continued efforts like these, the community aims to offer both practical and emotional support to those in need.
